MAIF is an independent agency of the State of Maryland, and as such, reports directly to the Governor and is responsible to the Maryland State Legislature. Rules governing MAIF are set out by law in Title 20 of the Insurance Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. Operating funds for MAIF are received from the insurance premiums written with MAIF. MAIF receives no State Funding and any debts or obligations of the Fund cannot be deemed to be debts of the State of Maryland. MAIF is advised by a Board of Trustees, seven of whom are appointed by the Governor and five chosen by members of the insurance industry. The Executive Director is also a member of the Board of Trustees and oversees the day to day operations. MAIF consists of operating units that include the Underwriting Department, which is responsible for issuing all policies according to eligibility requirements set out in the Annotated Code of Maryland; the Claims Department, which is responsible for handling all claims; the Human Resources Department; the Fiscal Department; the Information Systems Department; and the Administration Department.
